Introducing J.S. Burke
- #IndieBookBanter today welcomes one of our #IndieFriends an International Indie Author from the other side of the world J.S. Burke. Please tell us a little bit about yourself, and the best place for us to find out more.
I’m J.S. Burke, author of the ‘Dragon Dreamer Series’ and other books. I live in Georgia, U.S., with my family and rescue pets. I’m an artist, author, chemist, marine biologist, and teacher. The Dragon Dreamer books blend science and fantasy with author experiences. My varied background helps me write Science Fantasy novels with dragons, and science/math education books with cartoons and crystals.
‘The Dragon Dreamer’ worlds are places I love to visit, with characters I truly enjoy. They share their adventures with me. My education books help people understand chemistry and math, so they can better appreciate and protect our world. I often write in the den, with a great view of the clouds and wildlife.
2. Briefly tell us about your work in progress, what are you planning next?
I’m writing Book III of the Dragon Dreamer series, another stand-alone with the continuing adventures of my characters. I’m making a colouring book with the fantasy snowflakes my dragons grow in the winter clouds. These Celtic mandala snowflakes have designs with animals and plants. (Click on the Dragon Snowflake to see more of Jenny’s beautiful designs look out for the butterfly one which is my favourite).
3. What was the most unusual source of inspiration for any of your books?
The Dragon Dreamer books began when I was admiring the odd combination of my blue ceramic bowl with a roundish crystalline rock in the center. This seemed like a dragon’s nest. Suddenly I was seeing dragon life and legends in my head. So, I wrote a book!
4. Who was your favourite character to write about?
Octopuses are smart, creative, shape-shifter beings with incredible abilities. Scree is my kick-ass undersea philosophical Healer. She is unique. I’ve had feedback from people of all ages who love Scree, and she’s often featured in reviews of both books.
I love her tenacity: “What will be, will be. And then I’ll fix it.” An adult gave away Dragon Dreamer books, claiming Scree inspired her. A boy, not quite three, is so taken with Scree that he wants to go into the sea and meet her. He used an old leather purse to make a Healer bag like Scree’s, and even wants a huge pink pearl like hers!
5. Finally you are invited on a mission to a New World (unfortunately you cannot take any members of your family, friends or pets). Please tell us:-
a) Your favourite fictional character to accompany you?
I’d bring Drakor, the ice dragon in Dragon Lightning by J.S. Burke. He’s creative, makes lightning swords, and never gives up. He’s also a great flyer, for perfect transportation! What could be better?
b) Your favourite book?
I love too many to choose just one. I might take the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
c) Your favourite song?
I love the music “Pachelbel’s Canon” played on the harp; this is connected with so many memories. (What a beautiful piece of music click the image to go listen on YouTube).
d) Your favourite food & drink to take with you (we don’t know what will be available on the New World).
Chocolate. All of my characters love chocolate, too. Amazing coincidence?
Coffee. Even the aroma is wonderful!
e) Finally, tell us the one (Yes, that is just ONE) item you cannot live without?
I’d bring a humongous box of chocolate!
Here are the books that Jenny has produced some for educational purposes:-
Crystal Geometry and Crystal Colors use crystals and cartoons to teach; they are in school systems, and not yet on Amazon. (More info. on Jenny’s website)
The Dragon Dreamer is a science fantasy adventure with dragons and an undersea world. It’s layered for readers 9 to 99.
Arak is a dragon misfit. Determined to prove himself, he leaves on a quest, flies far over the sea . . . and crashes. Badly wounded, he faces death. A fearless, shape-shifter octopus named Scree finds and heals him, and an unexpected friendship begins. Arak returns to the Winter Festival, where dragons carve glaciers with fire and toss lightning bolts in the clouds. When an undersea volcano erupts, this triggers a towering tsunami and a deadly chain of events. Can Arak use his unique gifts to save the dragons?
Dragon Lightning by J.S. Burke
Dragon Lightning is a stand-alone book and also the second in the Dragon Dreamer series. It’s a science fantasy adventure with flying dragons, an undersea world, and unlikely friendships.
Drakor seems like a normal young ice dragon with a talent for making lightning swords. But he alone feels the changing heart of his island Volcano. It destroyed his beloved sire. Now he foresees their doom, but none will listen. As he seeks proof, the Volcano shakes him off into the frozen sea.
Meanwhile, Arak sails north with golden dragons and undersea shape-shifters. Dorali joins the quest, searching for adventure and escape as she struggles to cope with her terrible scars. The crew seeks a beautiful legend but discovers a terrifying reality when they rescue Drakor. Ice dragons are not what Arak expected, and Drakor’s waking volcano threatens all three realms.
