Introducing Dawn Singh

  1.  #IndieBookBanter today welcomes a very special guest our Creative Director the brains behind the UK Indie Lit Fest Dawn Singh. Please tell us a little bit about yourself, and the best place for us to find out more.

My name is Dawn Singh and I write as D M Singh. I hail from Bradford in West Yorkshire. I currently have 3 books out, all in the paranormal/fantasy genre. I’m a complete bibliophile and all round geek.

2. Briefly tell us about your work in progress, what are you planning next?

I am currently working on a spin-off for ‘Dead Normal’ called ‘Before Death’. This is the story of Death, before he became Death. It’s been fun to write as it is set back in time and this is the first of my novels which is set in a different historical era. I’m channelling my inner Austen.

3. What was the most unusual source of inspiration for any of your books?

My first novel is inspired by a conversation in a dream. It was a conversation between two girls, one of whom was a bit of loner. In the dream the second girl starts to fly around and the first of the girl says “… I didn’t know you were a witch.” To this the second girl replies “… don’t be silly, everyone knows it’s vampires that fly.”

It is just a snippet really but that relationship with those characters was the beginning of Regina, the protagonist, and her best friend Imogen.

4. Who was your favourite character to write about?

My favourite character to write is Amanda from ‘Dead Normal’. Probably because she has been the easiest character to write as I really like her. She’s down to earth, not very lady-like, always says the wrong thing and her mouth kicks in when it really shouldn’t. She’s not a typical leading lady and that’s what makes her more relatable.

5. Finally you are invited on a mission to a New World (unfortunately you cannot take any members of your family, friends or pets). Please tell us:-

a) Your favourite fictional character to accompany you?

It would have to be Dumbledore from ‘Harry Potter.’ Although I have other favourites, Dumbledore would be infinitely more entertaining.

b) Your favourite book?

Has to be Jane Eyre. This is a cruel thing to ask an avid reader by the way!

(Interviewer: I know and I am really sorry but all of us being big readers would mean the spaceship would be full of books and little else.)

c) Your favourite song?

‘No Rain’ by Blind Melon. They’re not my favourite band but whenever I hear it then it makes me think of my teen years and never fails to make me smile.

d) Your favourite food & drink to take with you (we don’t know what will be available on the New World).

It has to be chicken curry. I wouldn’t be able to live without Spice!

e) Finally, tell us the one (Yes, that is just ONE) item you cannot live without?

My laptop. I NEED to write!
